Josh Tewksbury to step down as Interim Executive Director, U.S Global Hub Director for Future Earth

Josh Tewksbury, Interim Executive Director and U.S. Global Hub Director for Future Earth, will be stepping down from his current roles to join the Smithsonian Tropical Research Institute (STRI) as its new Director this summer.

During his six years at Future Earth, Josh has helped expand the reach and impact of sustainability science through a number of ground-breaking initiatives, including the recently-launched Earth Leadership Program, the Sustainability Research and Innovation Congress, and the award-winning Anthropocene Magazine. In September of last year, Josh also took on the role of Interim Executive Director to help steer Future Earth through an important reform process, which will be completed later this year.

“Josh’s strong leadership, both of the U.S. Global Hub and of the organization as a whole, has helped Future Earth deliver on its mission to accelerate transformations to global sustainability through research and innovation,” said Maria Uhle, Co-Chair of Future Earth’s Governing Council. “While he will be missed, Josh has well-positioned Future Earth to scale up its work in the months ahead as we expand the Secretariat through new global offices and establish a Global Coordinating Hub to house our next Executive Director.”

In his new role with STRI, Josh will drive critical research into tropical ecosystems and their relevance to human welfare, continuing in an extensive career of conservation-oriented transdisciplinary research.
