MOOC: One Planet – One Ocean

Date: April 22, 2016

The planet's ocean basins, making up one big Ocean, are home to a fascinating array of animals, plants and other organisms, including vampire squid, lantern sharks and giant kelp. They are also crucial to the wellbeing of human communities everywhere. Now, this Ocean is the subject of a new massive open online course (MOOC) called "One Planet – One Ocean: From Science to Solutions" that will run from April 25 to July 3.

The class will comprise 10 modules, including lectures and quizzes, taught by some of the top thinkers in a range of fields. Topics include the deep sea, ocean governance and ocean solutions. Registration is open to everyone from academic researchers to interested citisens. The organisers write:

Our Massive Open Online Course will provide you a knowledge base that brings to you to the science and fascination of the ocean. Marine scientists team with economists, lawyers and philosophers to bring you a holistic view of how the ocean functions, how human interactions with the ocean can be understood, and what solutions are available to support both sustainable use and stewardship of our blue planet.

This MOOC is supported by GEOMAR, the Cluster of Excellence "The Future Ocean," University of Kiel,  International Ocean Institute and the Sustainable Development Solutions Network (SDSN) Association. Lecturers include Martin Visbeck of the University of Kiel and GEOMAR, who is Chairman of the German Committee of Future Earth.
