Dr. Yekaterina (Katia) Kontar is the newly-appointed Future Earth Network Lead. She comes to Future Earth from the Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy, Tufts University where she was conducting postdoctoral research and facilitating science diplomacy efforts relevant to disaster risk reduction and resilience. Katia joined the Fletcher School from the University of Alaska Fairbanks, where she received her doctoral degree in Science Communication and Policy. The focus of Katia’s graduate research was disaster risk reduction in rural Arctic communities. A key accomplishment of her graduate work was facilitation of dialogue among stakeholders — federal and university scientists, local knowledge holders and tribal leaders, and representatives from federal agencies — involved in flood management in Alaska and the Sakha Republic. Katia holds a Ph.D.in disaster risk communication and policy from the University of Alaska Fairbanks (2017), an M.B.A. in Public Administration, and a B.A. in Communications from the University of Findlay. Prior to starting her doctoral research, Katia fostered scientific literacy among K-12 students and promoted Antarctic research and discovery as an Education and Outreach Associate and Multimedia Specialist at the ANDRILL (Antarctic Geological Drilling) Program.
