Wendy Broadgate appointed director of Global Hub in Sweden

Dr Wendy Broadgate was Deputy Director, Natural Sciences, at the International Geosphere-Biosphere Programme (IGBP) from 2000 to 2015. Since February 2015 she has been director of The Fisheries Secretariat, a non-profit working towards sustainable fisheries in Europe. She says:

‘I am really excited to join Future Earth, to help transition the research networks of the global change programmes, as well as open up our networks to others working towards our vision. I am particularly excited about engaging with stakeholders so that our knowledge gets used for societal decisions, at this crucial time.’

At IGBP she played a key role in the strategic development of the programme, leading IGBPs portfolio of marine activities and building close collaboration with the other global change programmes. She was a strategic lead on projects such as ocean acidification, the IGBP great accelerations and the Planet Under Pressure Conference, making an impact in synthesis, policy engagement and communication.

Future Earth Executive Director Paul Shrivastava stated,

‘Wendy will be a phenomenal asset to our team. Her rich experience in science, policy engagement, international research and the non-profit sector will benefit many aspects of our work. We are thrilled to welcome her as part of the Future Earth team.’

Dr Broadgate was the lead author on a major policy brief on ocean acidification (IGBP, SCOR, IOC, 2013). She holds a PhD in marine chemistry from the University of East Anglia, UK.

She will officially start her work with the Future Earth Global Hub in Sweden in early February 2016.

The Future Earth Global Hub in Stockholm is one of five global hubs, the others being in Montreal, Paris, Colorado and Tokyo. Stockholm focuses on Future Earth’s research enabling and communication.
