Future Earth community contributions: Convention on Biological Diversity COP13

Date: October 19, 2016

The Convention on Biological Diversity, a United Nations body that shapes international policy on biodiversity, will hold its Thirteenth Conference of the Parties (COP13) in Cancún, Mexico, from 2 to 17 December. The meeting will attract global policy-makers, scientists, non-governmental organisations and more. COP13 will offer an update on the progress of nations toward meeting the Aichi Biodiversity Targets – a set of international goals that call for the world to, among other things, cut the rate of disappearance of natural ecosystems by half or more.

Future Earth is an observer organisation for the Convention on Biological Diversity and will help to organise the Science Forum at COP13. The forum aims to be a meeting place to share knowledge, approaches and solutions among scientists, policy-makers and civil society for mainstreaming biodiversity. It will focus on agriculture, fisheries, forestry and tourism. The Science Forum will run from 1 to 2 December.

Future Earth will also participate in events in the Rio Conventions Pavillion at the conference. They include "Biodiversity and Climate Change Day" on 6 December. This event is co-organised by bioDISCOVERY and ecoSERVICES, global research projects of Future Earth. The oneHEALTH project and the Future Earth Health Knowledge-Action Network are also organising an event on 14 December called "Planetary Health: Strengthening the Science-Policy Interface for Sustainable Development."

Participants from the Future Earth community are also joining several side events around COP13.
