Future Earth events in Montreal

This month, Future Earth Science and Engagement Committees and Governing Council will hold their annual meetings in Montreal, Canada. These events will run from 18 to 23 March and will draw representatives from all three governing bodies, Future Earth’s secretariat and global research projects and the Montreal research community. Participants will discuss the state and future of the programme, with an eye toward, among other things, planning how Future Earth can navigate a challenging political environment for science and sustainability. 

In conjunction with these meetings, Future Earth is also participating in a series of public events in the Montreal area. See a list of these events below:

Climate Clock 2017
18 March, 18:00-20:00 EDT

Join a panel discussion about the Climate Clock, an art and science installation that illustrates the dangers of climate change through a countdown clock. The clock was recently reset using data from the Global Carbon Project, a global research project of Future Earth.

The event is hosted by the Concordia Student Union, Concordia University, Human Impact Lab and Future Earth. Speakers include Corinne Le Quéré, Director of the Tyndall Centre for Climate Change Research and a member of the Future Earth Science Committee.

Networking event: Circular Economy for Deep Sustainability
20 March, 18:00-20:00 EDT

Take part in an event joining researchers with members of the Montreal business community to explore how to create a circular economy that actually works for deep sustainability.

Co-organised by Future Earth and International Reference Centre for the Life Cycle of Products, Processes and Services (CIRAIG). Collaborators include Centre interdisciplinaire de recherche en opérationnalisation du développement durable (CIRODD), the Institut L’environnement, le développement durable et l’économie circulaire (EDDEC) and Polytechnique Montréal.

Americana sessions
21 March

Future Earth has organised two sessions during the Americana conference, an environmental forum and international trade show that runs from 21 to 23 March.

The first, brought to you by the Finance & Economics Knowledge-Action Network, explores “Climate change risks as investment opportunities.” It runs from 10:00 to 11:30 on 21 March.

The second, from the Urban Knowledge-Action Network, focuses on “Promoting a systemic approach to energy management in cities worldwide” for an audience of international and local city officials and stakeholders. It will run from 13:30 to 15:00 on 21 March.

Shaping the future: the key role of science and technology
22 March, 12:00-14:00 EDT

Attend this luncheon organised by the Montreal Council on Foreign Relations (CORIM). The event will examine a range of topics, including “strengthening collaboration between academia and business” and “finding scientific and technological solutions to achieve a low-carbon society.”

Speakers include Koji Omi, Chairman and Founder of the Science and Technology in Society (STS) forum, and Paul Shrivastava, Senior Advisor to Future Earth. Registration required.
