Call for abstracts: Integrated Marine Biosphere Research (IMBeR) IMBIZO 5

The organisers of IMBIZO 5, an international meeting for ocean research, have opened a call for abstracts. The event will run from 2 to 5 October 2017 in Woods Hole, United States, and has the theme of “Marine biosphere research for a sustainable ocean: Linking ecosystems, future states and resource management.” It is an effort of the Integrated Marine Biosphere Research (IMBeR), a global research project of Future Earth, and is hosted by the Ocean, Carbon & Biogeochemistry Group at the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution.

The fifth IMBIZO, named after the Zulu word for “gathering,” will focus on the implementation of IMBeR’s new Science Plan for 2016 to 2025. This plan seeks to shape research to “Understand, quantify and compare the historic and present structure and functioning of linked ocean and human systems to predict and project changes including developing scenarios and options for securing or transitioning towards ocean sustainability.”

The event will include three workshops that will run concurrently but also interact. They will address “Critical Constraints on Projections,” “Metabolic Diversity and Evolution” and “Management Strategy Evaluation.” Each workshop will include about 40 participants.

Those wishing to attend the event must select one of the three workshops and submit an abstract by 31 May for consideration.
