Future Earth is looking for a scientist to drive the scientific synthesis of the Earth Commission, hosted by Future Earth at its Global Hub in Stockholm, Sweden. The role includes leading a small team to support the Earth Commission to produce an expert assessment to underpin science-based targets for the global commons. The role also involves supporting fundraising, reporting and budgetary oversight, in close collaboration with the Global Hub Director.

Job responsibilities

Future Earth hosts the Earth Commission, the scientific foundation stone of a multi-organization global collaboration, the Global Commons Alliance. The Earth Commission is charged with the development of authoritative assessment of the quantitative boundary conditions (for freshwater, biodiversity, land, oceans etc.) for a safe and just corridor for human development, to underpin the setting of science- based targets for businesses and cities. The science lead will drive the production of the Earth Commission products (a major report and scientific articles by 2022), coordinating and synthesising analyses by the Commissioners, Working Groups and the scientific staff of the Earth Commission secretariat. He/she will work closely with the Commission co-Chairs, Johan Rockström, Joyeeta Gupta and Qin Dahe, collaborators at PIK, IIASA and Future Earth and partners in the Global Commons Alliance. The role will also involve liaison with funders (reporting and budget management). Fundraising will be conducted in collaboration with the Global Hub Director.

This position is based at the Future Earth Global Hub in Stockholm, Sweden, and reports to the Global Hub Director, Sweden of Future Earth.

Minimum requirements:

• PhD in a field of sustainability science and 5 years experience conducting research
• Good knowledge of Earth System science, the Planetary Boundaries and tipping points concepts. Knowledge of social sciences and modelling an advantage.

Skills:

• Experience in conducting interdisciplinary research synthesis and/or assessments
• Leadership skills including proven experience in interdisciplinary research teams in an international context
• Excellence scientific writing skills and presentation skills, in English
• Experience in successful proposal writing and reporting to funders
• Excellent project management skills, including budget management, with experience managing multiple projects simultaneously
• International and intercultural sensitivity and capacity to work effectively with diverse, international teams.
• An initiative taker, with a capacity for creative human-centered problem solving
• Demonstrated ability to establish and maintain effective and trusting working relationships with directors, high-level experts and colleagues in research and administration.

Desired qualifications:

• Experience in leading synthesis or assessment efforts
• Experience of workshop design and moderation
• Knowledge of the Swedish language
• Experience of funder engagement and budget management
• Experience working with communities outside of academia (private, public, NGO etc).

International travel, and willingness to lead and participate in regular international virtual meetings, some outside of normal working hours, are required for this position.

This is a permanent position based at Future Earth’s Swedish Global Hub ℅ the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences, Stockholm, Sweden. Permission to work in Sweden is required.
