Future Earth Members Among Authors Selected for IPCC Special Report on Climate Change and Cities
The seventh assessment cycle of the International Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) will include a Special Report on Climate Change and Cities – the only special report to be produced this cycle. It will provide a timely assessment of the latest science related to climate change and cities, including climate impacts and risks, and actions that can be taken to minimize them.
A scoping meeting was held in April 2024 to draft the outline of the report. The IPCC solicited nominations for experts for consideration as Coordinating Lead Authors, Lead Authors, and Review Editors for the Special Report. The IPCC Bureau has now selected the author team to produce the report, which includes several Future Earth community members:
- Xuemei Bai, Coordinating Lead Author, Chapter 4 (Earth Commission, Urban Knowledge-Action Network)
- Debra Roberts, Coordinating Lead Author, Chapter 5 (Urban Knowledge-Action Network)
- Shobhakar Dhakal, Coordinating Lead Author, Chapter 2 (Global Carbon Project)
- Masahiro Hashizume, Lead Author, Chapter 2 (Health Knowledge-Action Network)
- WGIII Vice-Chair Şiir Kılkış, Review Editor, Chapter 3 (Urban Knowledge-Action Network)
- Shuaib Lwasa, Coordinating Lead Author, Chapter 1 (Urban Knowledge-Action Network)
- Niki Frantzeskaki, Lead Author, Chapter 2 (Urban Knowledge-Action Network)
- Cathy Oke, Lead Author, Chapter 1 (Urban Knowledge-Action Network)

The Special Report will be developed under the joint scientific leadership of Working Groups I, II and III with support from the Working Group II Technical Support Unit. It’s due to be released in March 2027.
