South Asian Cities Explore Pathways for Climate Resilience
The 15th Science Awareness Webinar, organized by Future Earth’s Urban Knowledge-Action Network (Urban KAN) and Future Earth South Asia, explored how cities in South Asia are responding to climate change, biodiversity loss, and rapid urbanization.
Held on 27 March 2026 in collaboration with the Divecha Centre for Climate Change at the Indian Institute of Science, the webinar brought together researchers and practitioners to discuss more inclusive and locally grounded approaches to urban sustainability.
Speakers Dr. Harini Nagendra, Dr. Vishal Narain, and Dr. Perrine Hamel examined the challenges facing inland and peri-urban areas, including environmental vulnerability, social inequality, and pressures on urban ecosystems. Discussions highlighted the importance of community participation, traditional ecological knowledge, and nature-based solutions in building more resilient cities.
Across the session, participants emphasized that effective urban planning must integrate social equity, biodiversity, and climate adaptation while reflecting the realities of rapidly changing rural–urban landscapes in the Global South.
