Input requested for Convention on Biological Diversity’s (CBD) consultation on the post-2020 global biodiversity framework

Future Earth and the French National Center for Scientific Research (CNRS), are gathering input for the Convention on Biological Diversity’s (CBD) consultation on the post-2020 global biodiversity framework.

As the Aichi targets come to an end in 2020, we are left with the CBD’s 2050 Vision: “by 2050, biodiversity is valued, conserved, restored and wisely used, maintaining ecosystem services, sustaining a healthy planet and delivering benefits essential for all people” ("Living in Harmony with Nature", CBD Strategic Plan for Biodiversity 2011-2020). Looking back at and learning from the last decade brings important questions for the biodiversity scientific community as to how this vision can be achieved and through which knowledge and tools. Future Earth and the CBD recently joined forces in that regard.

The survey consists of 6 questions aiming at (i) proposing a set of priorities emanating from the scientific community and (ii) critically analysing current targets and indicators. The deadline for submitting responses is set on Monday, 5 November 2018. Please note that answers may be submitted in French or English, and that you may submit answers as an individual or an organisation.

Two webinars will be organised by Future Earth and CNRS (time and date TBD) to present and discuss the results of this consultation, before and after the Conference of the Parties to the Convention on Biological Diversity (COP 14). Please note that we would be happy to have you or your organisation join these webinars.

You can contact cbd.consultation@futureearth.org for more information.

Following the reception of your written contributions and the two webinars, responses and webinar discussion points will be collected and submitted as a service to the CBD Secretariat by December 15.

For the Future Earth community

Concerning COP14, we would like to gather all information needed to effectively coordinate between the various events in which the Future Earth community may be involved to help us maximise their impact, including communications efforts. Are you or any of your colleagues associated with Future Earth planning on participating in or have you submitted a proposal for activities at COP14? If so, we kindly ask you to fill in this quick form! We recognise that side event proposals haven’t been selected yet but it will help us in mapping out potential events.

Please find here the document submitted to the CBD summarising reflections from Future Earth.
