Journée Future Earth at the Paris Hub of Future Earth

The Future Earth Paris Hub invites French scientists to join the Journée Future Earth (Future Earth Day) to mobilise the French Future Earth community and bring together scientists around the topic of global sustainability. The event will take place on May 9th at the headquarters of the French National Center for Scientific Research (CNRS) between 9am and 5:30pm.

Since the publication of the IPCC Special Report on Global Warming of 1.5°C in October 2018, and of the IPBES regional assessments, we are facing a new record year in terms of temperatures as well as an intense political debate on the societal implications of the environmental crisis. Given the upcoming publication of two new IPCC Special Reports in 2019 and the ongoing negotiations of the post-2020 global biodiversity framework, it is crucial to highlight and reinforce the role of scientific research in facing global environmental challenges. At the international level, platforms like Future Earth and the World Climate Research Programme (WCRP) operate at the interface between researchers, decision-makers and research funders, pushing for co-design and transdisciplinary science for sustainable development.

Following the first Future Earth Day, which was held in France in December 2016, the Paris Hub of Future Earth and the French National Committee on Global Changes (CNFCG) are organising a second event in May 2019. The French scientific community will have the chance to learn about and discuss Future Earth, its priorities, and the broader Future Earth network. The event, held in French, is open to all actors interested and/or involved in sustainable development in France, including the French research community and Future Earth partners and funders.

The objective of Future Earth Day is to share the network’s diverse experiences and initiate new collaborations at national, regional and global levels. With this in mind, we are aiming to:

  1. Inform the French scientific community of Future Earth and the opportunities we offer
  2. Discuss the different projects involved with the Future Earth network and its partners (roundtables and poster sessions)
  3. Launch Science-Based Pathways for Sustainability in France, an initiative designed to start a cross-cutting reflection on the implementation of science-based targets in France for freshwater, oceans, biodiversity and land, in interaction with the other Sustainable Development Goals (parallel breakout sessions)

The registration for this event is now closed (April 15). If you would like to be put on the waiting list, please contact vincent.virat@futureearth.org. Please note that the event will be in French.

Future Earth values the participation of Early Career Researchers (ECRs) and the will cover the travel costs of eight ECRs based in France. The selected participants will  help facilitate the parallel breakout sessions and present the key take-away messages of the day during the wrap-up session (in French). Please apply online using the registration link.
