The Future Earth Initiative

Future Earth is a major international research platform providing the knowledge and support to accelerate transformations to a sustainable world. Future Earth is a 10-year initiative to advance Global Sustainability Science, build capacity in this rapidly expanding area of research and provide an international research agenda to inspire natural and social scientists working around the world.

Future Earth is managed by a global Secretariat, which consists of five Global Hubs based in Colorado, Montreal, Paris, Stockholm and Tokyo. The Secretariat is complemented by Regional Centers in Asia, the Middle East and North Africa, Latin America and the Caribbean, and Africa.
The Paris Hub operates under the Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique (CNRS). The hub offices are located at the Jussieu campus of Sorbonne University in the 5th arrondissement of central Paris. The current team has 6 full-time staff members.

Future Earth Paris Hub is currently seeking two interns for 4-6 month starting September 2020.

Both interns will be working on the Science Based Pathways for Sustainability initiative, which intends to facilitate the co-design of integrated pathways to achieve the four Life-Supporting Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) at the national, regional, and global levels, while accounting for the full set of SDGs. The overall objective of the Science-Based Pathways for Sustainability Initiative is to foster integrated and transdisciplinary approaches that will contribute to knowledge-based decision-making at different scales, that supports the achievement of the SDGs within a resilient, life-supporting Earth system.

Position 1: 2020 Ocean Workshop
As part of the implementation of the global initiative in France, a 2-day national workshop focusing on SDG14 will be held (virtually or physically) in Autumn 2020. The objective of this workshop is the following: “By 2030, 30% of the French exclusive economic zone (EEZ) included in a network of marine protected areas (MPAs), representative of the variety of ecosystems both metropolitan and from overseas, and at least one third of it with an effective high protection. By 2050 this MPAs network will have allowed an improvement of the ecological state of the French EEZ”. Coordinated by Future Earth, the workshop is being overseen by a Scientific Committee of leading French ocean researchers (IRD, Sulubaai Environmental Foundation, CNRS, Plateforme Océan-Climat).

Position 2: 2020 Land Workshop
A worksop on land is also planned to be held in October 2020 together with a Science Committee (INRAE, CIRED, Reims University) who has identified the following objective “Strengthen the services provided by land (socio-cultural, provisioning, regulating) in France by 2030 in order to reach carbon neutrality in 2050”. The workshop will bring together a variety of scientists and stakeholders with expertise in land science, as well as on direct and indirect drivers of loss in the services provided by land to identify integrated pathways for achieving this objective.

For the two positions, tasks will include assistance in the workshops (but can also evolve depending on the project’s advancement and the intern’s preferences):

• Planning logistics and communication needs for the workshops
• Preparation of participatory sessions for the workshops
• Facilitation and note-taking during the workshops
• Interviews with experts to supplement workshop material
• Production of workshop outputs (i.e. scientific article, synthesis report, blog post,  etc.)

Salary
573 € per month (legally bound) plus associated benefits (subsidized access to University restaurant and support to local transport costs).

Candidate qualifications

• Fluent in French and English, with excellent writing skills
• Currently enrolled in a Master’s level program in a relevant field (and will remain enrolled for the duration of the internship)
• Knowledge of sustainability and environmental challenges, and interest in transdisciplinary and interdisciplinary research
• Motivated, organised and able to work independently to deadlines as well as to follow instructions, with attention to detail and good interpersonal and communication skills
• EU citizens or in possession of a relevant French visa for the duration of the stage and eligible for a ‘Convention de Stage’¹.
• Available for 4-6 months starting ideally in September 2020

¹ A convention de stage is a document required by the French government for any student interested in doing an internship in France. It is similar to a job contract, in that it specifies the missions and the expectations demanded of interns. It must be signed by the educational institution with which the student is affiliated.
